Alaska House Passes New Bill to Regulate AI Sexual Imagery and Child Social Media Usage

The article reports that the Alaska House of Representatives has unanimously passed House Bill 47, aimed at addressing risks from AI generated sexual content and children’s use of social media.

A central provision of the bill is the criminalization of AI generated child sexual abuse material. It closes a legal loophole by making it illegal to create, possess, or distribute explicit images of minors produced by AI, even if no real child was involved.

The legislation also expands beyond minors to cover adults. It introduces penalties for creating or sharing non consensual AI generated sexual images, such as deepfake pornography and revenge content.

Another key element is potential liability for tech companies. AI platforms could face significant fines, reportedly up to 1 million dollars per violation, if their tools are used to generate illegal child sexual content.

In addition, the bill introduces strict rules on children’s social media use. These include limits on access, restrictions on addictive platform features, and broader efforts to reduce exposure to harmful content.

Lawmakers from both parties supported the bill, citing the rapid development of AI and the need to update laws to protect minors and vulnerable individuals.

However, some concerns were raised about the breadth of the social media restrictions and whether parts of the bill might face legal or constitutional challenges.

Overall, the article presents the bill as a comprehensive attempt to regulate emerging harms from AI and digital platforms, especially those affecting children.
