Arrest in Argentina sports piracy case

As of August 22, 2025, Argentine justice has delivered a major blow to audiovisual piracy in Latin America by arresting the founder of the website Al Angulo TV, which illicitly broadcast national and international football matches, Formula 1, and La Liga events. The arrest followed a police raid on the suspect’s residence in Paraná, Entre Ríos, where a “lab” was uncovered. Authorities seized computers, cellphones, and technological gear used for the operation. The legal action was ordered by the Juzgado de Garantías No. 4 in San Isidro, under the oversight of Judge Esteban Eduardo Rossignoli, and carried out by Argentina’s Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Cybercrime (UFEIC) with support from the Alliance Against Audiovisual Piracy (ALIANZA) and La Liga. The illicit network included around 14 mirror domains and an Android app, generating revenue via informal ads, virtual wallets, and cryptocurrencies—assets that were also confiscated. The operation is part of a broader regional strategy that includes IP blocking, removal orders for illegal apps like MagisTV and FlujoTV, an anti-piracy “War Room” in Argentina, and collaboration with platforms like Mercado Libre to safeguard intellectual property and protect consumers from malware, data theft, and other business damages.
