Copyright Commission, NCC Partner Against Online Piracy

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (also NCC) have reaffirmed an inter-agency commitment to combat online piracy in the country’s creative sector  . During a meeting in Abuja, Copyright Commission Director-General Dr. John Asein praised the NCC’s leadership in Nigeria’s digital transformation, and emphasized the disruptive impact of piracy on creators and investors  .

 

To address growing piracy concerns—both domestically and internationally—the agencies plan to finalize and implement Draft Copyright Enforcement Guidelines targeting ISPs and digital intermediaries, clearly defining their legal duties under the 2022 Copyright Act  . Dr. Asein also proposed forming an inter-agency task force and a multi-stakeholder forum comprising ISPs, regulators, and law enforcement to develop a comprehensive Code of Practice  .

 

NCC Executive Vice-Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida (represented by Mrs. Rimini Makama) supported the initiative, vowing prompt review of the guidelines and early signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize cooperation  . This partnership aims to secure Nigeria’s digital space and protect the creative economy.
