Deepfake Scam Exploits Romanian Presidential Candidates to Lure Victims into Fake ‘Neptun Deep’ Investment
A recent scam in Romania leverages deepfake technology to impersonate presidential candidates George Simion and Nicușor Dan, promoting a fictitious government investment scheme named “Neptun Deep.” These AI-generated videos claim that citizens can earn RON 9,000 monthly by investing RON 1,400. Victims are directed to counterfeit websites mimicking official news outlets, featuring fabricated endorsements from prominent politicians and false testimonials. This scheme is part of a broader pattern of scams utilizing deepfakes and fake endorsements to deceive individuals into advance-fee frauds. Bitdefender advises the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious content, and utilize tools like Scamio and Link Checker to verify the legitimacy of online offers.
