Football Australia receives surprise video from Fifa boss Infantino amid news of financial pain
At Football Australia’s 2026 Annual General Meeting, FIFA president Gianni Infantino delivered a surprise prerecorded video message praising Football Australia’s efforts to bridge the divide between the traditional “soccer” culture and the modern “football” identity in Australia. He highlighted the new Australian Championship, won by South Melbourne in its inaugural season, as an important step toward uniting different parts of the game.
The positive message contrasted with the difficult situation facing Football Australia. The federation expects to record a loss of about A$5 million in 2026 despite increased revenue linked to World Cup activities. This follows a much larger loss in the previous year, and the organisation has already reduced staff numbers as it deals with rising costs.
The AGM also exposed governance tensions within Australian football. Two board candidates supported by A League clubs failed to secure positions, while new directors were elected and further board appointments remain to be made under gender parity requirements. Football Australia is also adjusting how it manages sports betting integrity and aims to return to financial break even by 2027.
