Former #1 Movie Piracy Site “Strongly Linked” to Global Infostealer Activity

A recent Microsoft report uncovered a widespread infostealer malware campaign infecting around 1 million devices, and it traced the threat back to pirate streaming sites. The site Fmovies—previously the world’s most popular movie piracy platform before its shutdown in 2024—is “strongly linked” to this global malware operation, according to TorrentFreak  .

The infostealer malware secretly collects sensitive data from users’ devices—like login credentials, banking information, and personal files—putting victims at risk of identity theft, financial loss, and unauthorized access to their devices. Users who visited Fmovies were likely exposed to code that silently downloaded the malware onto their systems  .

Though Fmovies was taken offline by Vietnamese authorities in August 2024, its legacy continues: the campaign was ongoing into 2025, showing how even shuttered piracy sites can foster lingering cyber threats  .

This case highlights a critical risk: pirate streaming platforms may serve as vectors for serious malware infections. Users seeking free access to content may unintentionally compromise their security and privacy by interacting with malicious websites.
