Hollywood’s Ecosystem for Combating Piracy

Hollywood’s anti-piracy ecosystem combines legal, technological, and collaborative strategies to protect movies, TV and streaming content from pervasive online piracy, which continues to cost the U.S. and global entertainment markets billions annually. The Motion Picture Association (MPA) leads industry-wide efforts through the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) — a coalition of nearly 50 studios, broadcasters and sports rights holders working with global law enforcement such as the FBI, Interpol and Europol to detect, deter and dismantle piracy networks worldwide. To shore up digital defences, the industry also leverages MovieLabs’ “2030 Vision” initiative to build secure, cloud-based workflows and interoperability that make content production and distribution more resilient, and the Trusted Partner Network (TPN) for comprehensive security assessments of cloud and app service providers across the media ecosystem. This multi-pronged strategy—enforcement, technology innovation, and cooperative standards—aims to send a strong message that piracy is a serious crime and safeguard creative jobs and revenue.
