India’s video sector at risk of losing $ 2.4 billion to piracy by 2029: Study
A recent study by Media Partners Asia (MPA), IP House, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) warns that India’s online video sector could face a revenue loss of up to $2.4 billion by 2029 due to digital piracy. In 2024 alone, approximately 90 million users in India accessed pirated video content, leading to an estimated $1.2 billion in lost revenue.
The study projects that, without effective anti-piracy measures, the number of users consuming illegal content could rise to 158 million by 2029, further hindering the growth of India’s digital video industry. However, implementing targeted strategies to combat piracy could help recover up to $1.1 billion in revenue by 2029. Such measures could also boost content creation by $500 million and generate approximately 47,000 new jobs in the sector.
Despite existing legal protections like the Copyright Act, the Cinematograph Act, and the Information Technology Act, the study highlights a significant gap in enforcement, attributing it to a lack of prioritization by local and national authorities. The research concludes that anti-piracy efforts are essential not only to curb losses but also to drive the growth and sustainability of the digital video market in India.
