LaLiga hits 1,600 convictions for illegal match broadcasts in hospitality venues
LaLiga has tallied 1,600 convictions against hospitality venues (restaurants, cafés, bars, hotels) for illegally broadcasting soccer matches. Of those, 611 convictions were issued this year alone.
The Spanish league claims that audiovisual piracy costs the national football industry €600 million to €700 million annually. Since 2019, LaLiga has made criminal lawsuits a key part of its anti-piracy strategy targeting “Horeca” (hotel/restaurant/café) businesses. To aid enforcement, LaLiga also launched an anonymous reporting channel for violations.
In recent months, the league has participated in international operations (with Europol and others) to shut down illegal streaming services distributing thousands of channels worldwide.
