MultiChoice targets a new group in DStv piracy crackdown

MultiChoice, the owner of DStv and SuperSport, is stepping up its anti-piracy campaign in South Africa—this time targeting a new group beyond small content resellers. Instead of focusing on resellers of illicit set-top boxes, the company is now disrupting illegal live streams from suspicious account holders, leveraging AI-driven detection and partnerships with local law enforcement and its subsidiary Irdeto  . Piracy remains a massive issue in South Africa, with Premier League matches—costing about £1 million per game to rights holders—and half of Champions League streams pirated. Formula 1, UFC, NFL, and NBA also suffer heavy losses. MultiChoice warns individuals caught could face up to R2 million in fines and 10 years in prison.
