Peru Cuts Illegal Online Gambling by 40% Through Regulatory Crackdown and Enforcement
Peru has achieved a 40% reduction in illegal online gambling within a year of implementing Law No. 31557, which regulates online sports betting and gaming. The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) attributes this success to stringent enforcement measures, including collaboration with financial institutions to block transactions to unauthorized operators, and the establishment of a licensing system requiring operators to pay a 12% tax on net profits and a minimum license guarantee of $235,000. Since December 2024, 683 new betting venues have registered, and 60 licensed platforms are now operating. The sector is projected to generate $2.5 billion in 2025 through tax contributions and foreign investment. Additionally, a 1% Selective Consumption Tax on bets is set to take effect in July 2025.
