Piracy is on the rise in Australia again

The article explains that online film and TV piracy is increasing again in Australia after years of decline. When Netflix launched in Australia in 2015, affordable and convenient streaming significantly reduced illegal downloading because viewers finally had easy access to content.

A decade later, the streaming market has become highly fragmented. Australians now subscribe to multiple services including Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Stan, Binge, Kayo Sports, and others. Rising subscription costs are pushing many consumers back toward piracy as households struggle to pay for numerous platforms at once.

The article highlights that Australians spent nearly A$4 billion on streaming subscriptions in 2025, with average monthly household spending rising sharply. As a result, some users are turning to aggregation apps such as Stremio that allow access to pirated content through unofficial add ons and streaming sources.

Australia has historically had some of the world’s highest piracy rates. Earlier piracy was often driven by delayed content releases, regional restrictions, and limited legal access to international shows and movies. Streaming initially solved many of those frustrations, but the growing number of exclusive platforms has recreated similar problems.

The article also notes that piracy technology has become easier to use. Modern streaming piracy often requires little technical knowledge compared with older torrenting methods. Apps and online communities now make illegal access more accessible to mainstream audiences.

At the same time, media companies continue increasing enforcement efforts through blocking orders, legal action, and anti piracy campaigns. However, critics argue that enforcement alone will not solve the issue if legal streaming remains too fragmented and expensive for consumers.

The broader conclusion is that piracy tends to rise when legal access becomes inconvenient or overpriced. The article suggests the entertainment industry may need simpler and more affordable distribution models if it wants to reduce piracy again.
