World Cup Anti-Piracy Measures Must Not Undermine EU Digital Rights

The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA Europe) has warned that anti piracy measures introduced around the 2026 FIFA World Cup must not come at the expense of fundamental digital rights in the European Union. The group supports efforts to combat illegal sports streaming but argues that some proposals, such as broad network level blocking, rapid website takedowns, and extra judicial enforcement powers, risk overblocking lawful content and undermining due process. CCIA Europe calls for anti piracy actions to remain proportionate, transparent, and subject to appropriate legal safeguards. The organization stresses that protecting intellectual property and preserving users’ rights to access information, freedom of expression, and an open internet should be treated as complementary goals rather than competing interests.
